  April 5, 2010: "He Said"

I got quite a bit of response to my column of quotations by women last week. That has encouraged me to follow up this week with some words from men. Several readers suggested their favorites. Today I’m offering quotes from men: Abraham Lincoln, Albert Schweitzer, Adlai Stevenson, Adolph Hitler, Alfred E. Neuman, Aldous Huxley, Albert Einstein, Al Capone and myself. Now, I know it is an unbecoming, egotistical thing to quote oneself. Still, I figure it is my column and I should be able to quote whomever I wish. Besides, I’m not chopped liver! (Okay, okay, it’s a personal opinion.) See if you can match the men with their quotes. I’ve added a comment with each quote. Correct answers are at the bottom.

  1. "Patriotism is not a short outburst of emotion, but it is the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime." Here's a clue. This man once was a candidate for the US presidency. His comment was representative of his personality. He lost.
  2. "We live in a world where lemonade is made from artificial flovoring and furniture is made from real lemons."  Ain't that a hoot?  Go figure.  I saw some imitation crab legs in the grocery.  Made me feel crabby the rest of the week.  Just give me "real" and most of the time I'm a happy guy.
  3. "A clash of ideas is not a problem.  It is an opportunity."  I like that.  I enjoy an occassional "fellowship of controversy."  This is when people of good will engage in spirited differences of opinion but who never let winning an argument destroy civility nor a personal relationship.  Needless to say, I don't have much respect for the current state of political discourse.
  4. "A man does not have to be an angel to be a saint."  An angel is a messenger from God.  A saint is a servant of God.  The speaker of this quote was both.

  1. "I want to know God's thoughts...all the rest are just details."  Some thoughtful folk argue that God is in the details.  Some argue that God's thoughts are to be found only in the Bible.  Others argue that God must still be thinking and they wonder what God is thinking lately.
  2. "He has the right to criticize who has the heart to help."  How much noise now fills the air from those who have not the heart to bend down and help?  They who rail against the "bleeding hearts" may one day learn why spewing smoke and debris into the air usually leaves a crater but not a living legacy of holiness and good.
  3. "The great masses of the people...will more easily fall victim to a great lie than to a small one."
  4. "Vote and vote often."  This, of course, is illegal.  But we can wish, can't we?
  5. "The average dog is a nicer person than the average person."  I don't really believe this quote but I do enjoy it.  Maybe the reason is that sometimes we all run across someone who is so annoying that we hope they get their come-uppance.  Plus, I do like dogs.

There you have it. Check the correct answers below. Let me know your wise, funny, memorable quotes. I may add them to my Collection. God bless!
